Mosses generally occur in colonies of various moss species but can often be found with liverworts present. Here is a Marchantia present but leafy liverworts may be found interlaced among the mosses.

Unlike Sphagnum that requires a constantly damp to emersed habitat to survive, this moss that seems to have some Sphagnum characteristics is a terrestrial species.

Displaying some attributes of Sphagnum this terrestrial moss species also can be confused as a liverwort. Or is that vice versa?

While similar to some moss genera, leafy liverworts are members of the Marchantiophyta not of the true mosses, the Bryophyta.

While obviously not a moss, this bryophyte, any moss or moss-like plant, is the most commonly encountered liverwort, often occurring as a weed species in plant nurseries.
